Determining When Patents Expire
It used to be so simple to know if a patent was still in force or not. A patent lasted seventeen years from issue, unless a court or the owner killed it in the meantime. The one unforgivable sin was to mistakenly advise a client that a dead patent was alive or vice versa. Today that determination is complex, but one thing remains the same. You damn well better be right whether you say the patent is alive and well or it's dead as a doornail!
